UPDATE Ohio State 62 VCU 60, 2:43 remaining in the half: 6-foot-6 VCU sophomore forward Mo Alie-Cox fouls out as both the Buckeyes and Rams battle to survive what has been an otherwise brutal Day One of the tournament. Alie-Cox hit the bench with seven points. On the possession before Alie-Cox committed his final and fifth foul, D'Angelo Russell — fueled by the rivers of blood that had to be wiped from his face moments earlier — hit his first field goal of the game, a long-range 3-pointer to give OSU the lead. Stay tuned. We've got another nail-biter on our hands.

Meet No. 16 Lafayette
Location: Easton, PA
Enrollment: 2,486 undergrad
Mascot: Leopards
Record: 20-12
Last NCAA tournament appearance: 2000
Notes: The Leopards emerged from a wild Patriot League tournament where they were seeded fourth, knocking off No. 1 Bucknell in the semis before surviving No. 6 American 65-63 in the title game. (Many thought Lafayette would be heading to Dayton for one of the First Four clashes, but they were fast-tracked to face Villanova.) The Leopards have one of the best shooting teams in all of basketball — 2nd in three-point field goal percentage — but are absolutely abysmal at defense and rebounding, so expect plenty of points. Notable alumni include Pete Carril (former coach at Princeton) and Joe Maddon (current Cubs manager).

UCLA 60, SMU 59: Holysmokes, you guys, did the Bruins just get bailed out, either by SMU or the refs. Bryce Alford launched a 3-point shot that was definitely off and the officials called a goaltending on SMU that could not be reviewed by the officials in the closing seconds of this game. SMU got two good looks to try to win after the bucket counted — both 3-point attempts from Nic Moore, who boarded his own miss. Gosh, I just don't know if that goaltending call was correct. Verne Lundquist also seems very skeptical. - Final

BUTLER 56, TEXAS 48: The Horns killed themselves with 15 turnovers while Butler survived the loss of Roosevelt Jones to advance to a Saturday game with Notre Dame. Kellen Dunham led the Bulldogs with 20 points while Jonathan Holmes had 15 for Texas in the loss. Not a great day so far for the Big 12, which is now 0-3 after only five completed games. - Final

UPDATE: UCLA 44 SMU 51, 5:21 remaining in the game: With about seven minutes left and after a 17-point run, SMU took its first lead of the game since about halfway through the first half to go up on UCLA, 47-44. The Mustangs then opened up their lead with consecutive scores on a Markus Kennedy slam dunk and Nic Moore jump shot. UCLA's Steve Alford called timeout to regroup. Needs to line up the troops soon if the Bruins are going to join the group of victorious underdogs today.

UPDATE: Butler 44, Texas 43, 2:14 remaining in the second half: Isaiah Taylor's speed is giving Butler all kinds of trouble, as he's scored eight straight for the Horns to get them within one. Texas's size is demolishing the Bulldogs inside, as they now have five blocks and lead the rebounding battle 39-24.

UPDATE: Butler 39, Texas 35, 7:37 remaining in the second half: Roosevelt Jones is heading back into the game after the media timeout as the Bulldogs try to hold the lead they accrued in his absence. Texas is now outrebounding them 34-23 and doing their damage inside, with consecutive layups by Myles Turner and Isaiah Taylor cutting it to four.

FINAL Texas Southern 72, Arizona 93: Arizona handedly defeated Texas Southern, making the Miller brothers 2-0 in the tournament so far (if you're counting play-in games as things) and giving everyone in the country who filled out a bracket a short breather on a day that has pretty much destroyed everyone. Forward Stanley Johnson led the Wildcats in points, scoring 22 on an 8-for-11 afternoon from the field and a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc. Senior guard T.J. McConnell had a nice little game, with 12 points, four assists and four steals. Earlier today, we highlighted McConnell as a "Senior to Watch," so you probably should review the rest of the players on that list as we continue to roll through these games. Onward, Arizona.

UPDATE: Butler 33, Texas 30, 11:57 remaining in the second half: The Bulldogs went on a field goal drought of over 11 minutes, but the Horns couldn't put together much of a lead, shooting just 29.2%. On the Roosevelt Jones injury front, things don't sound good:Roosevelt Jones, trying to run and stretch out in hallway for Butler, sprints in hallway then slams nearby table and drops a loud F-bomb.Mar. 19, 2015
