UPDATE: Louisville 53, UC Irvine 53, 1:53 remaining in the second half: Blackshear connected on the free throw, but after a few defensive stops on both end, UC Irvine tied it up with a tip-in on the break. Also should note that Mamadou Ndiaye picked up his fourth foul. - Upset Alert

UPDATE Valparaiso 27, Maryland 31, halftime: Valparaiso missed some good, easy bucket opportunities throughout the half, which would have ramped up pressure on fourth-seeded Maryland early. As it was, the Crusaders hung tough and were able to cut their deficit to four by the end of the period, as Alec Peters drained a pretty 3-pointer off a pick-and-roll with six seconds left. Peters led Valpo in scoring with nine points while Terrapins standout freshman Melo Trimble had a relatively quiet half, contained to just five points on 1-for-4 shooting. Not gonna slap an "upset alert" chip on this game yet, but it's a good one to keep an eye on. Remember that in 1998, Valpo was a 4-seed and "The Shot" happened. Presented to you without further commentary. As our fearless leader just pointed out, if Maryland wins, the Midwest region will be all chalk through the first set of games.

UPDATE: Louisville 52, UC Irvine 51, 3:33 remaining in the second half: Mamadou Ndiaye is controlling things on both ends for the underdogs, altering shots in the paint and drawing the entire Louisville defense to him on the other side. Luke Nelson's jumper gave the Anteaters a brief lead, but senior Wayne Blackshear earned an and-one to put the Cardinals back in front. He'll have a free throw after the media timeout. - Upset Alert

UPDATE: Louisville 48 UC Irvine 45, 6:13 remaining in the second half: UC Irvine's 7'6" monster in the middle has been a presence in the second half, but the Cardinals are managing to survive the problems posed by Mamadou Ndiaye. Terry Rozier, Wayne Blackshear and Quentin Snider are all in double digits for No. 4 seed and the Rick Pitino press has forced 13 turnovers.

UPDATE: Louisville 30, UC Irvine 28, Halftime: The Cardinals offense goes as Terry Rozier goes, and the sophomore guard (8 points, 4 assists) was the driving force of the 14-2 run that allowed the No. 4 seed to take the lead. The Anteaters led early but had difficulty against the Louisville pressure before composing themselves for a 5-0 run to close out the first half of their first NCAA tournament game.

UPDATE Indiana 72, Wichita State 74, 1:22 remaining in the game: This one is going down to the wire folks. As the Hoosiers continue to push the seventh-seeded Shockers to the wire, there's this stat. Wichita State is 22-for-26 from the free-throw line. They also are 2-for-13 from behind the arc, so that's been problematic for a team that typically shoots well. - Upset Alert

UPDATE Indiana 64 Wichita State 70, 5:20 remaining in the game: Shaquille Morris with a monster jam for the Shockers. Indiana keeps pushing Wichita State, but the higher-seeded Wichita team keeps finding answers. Tekele Cotton drains a clutch 3-pointer from the right baseline. This game is poised to be a close one til the end.

So West Virginia's Senator Joe Manchin just dodged a bracket bullet, given that he made the totally sensical and apolitical move of picking the Mountaineers to go all the way.
But the other way to look at it is that he almost jinxed the team royally. Read more about Capitol Hill Madness here.Apparently .1 percent of all of you who filled out Yahoo Fantasy brackets are equally relieved. -

West Virginia 68, Buffalo 62: The Bulls gave it their all in their first NCAA tournament game in program history but just couldn't find a basket late once they tied it at 62. Juwan Staten and Devin Williams led the way for West Virginia with 32 total points, and the Mountaineers move on to play the winner of Maryland/Valparaiso. This win means the Big 12 is now 2-0 on the day and No. 12 seeds have gone 0-4 in the tournament for the first time since 2007. - Final

Wondering why Buffalo's uniforms say "New York" instead of "Buffalo?"For those who have not been paying close attention the past two years: It’s an attempt to make people – especially on a national level – understand that UB is the flagship university of the New York State system and it’s on a par in terms of its size and academic standing with the other biggest state universities in the country.

Meet No. 13 UC Irvine
Location: Irvine, CA
Enrollment: 23,530 undergrad
Mascot: Anteaters
Record: 21-12
Last NCAA tournament appearance: This is the program's first.
Notes: The Anteaters earned their first NCAA bid with a Big West title game victory over Hawaii, winning as the top seed at the nearby Honda Arena in Anaheim, CA, and the experience was a memorable one for the fans in attendance. "Besides meeting Taylor Swift, this is the best moment of my life," senior Fritzi Washington told the Los Angeles Times. "When I rushed that court, I cried." It's also important everyone knows the student-spirit organization at Irvine is called the Antourage and that the Shake-It-Off-loving Washington is the co-president.

UPDATE Belmont 32, Virginia 40, halftime: Justin Anderson, whose health has been the biggest question facing Virginia this postseason, closed out the half in top form, stopping what should have been an easy fast-break opportunity for Belmont to pull within six. Anderson sprinted the length of the court and blocked sophomore Nick Smith's layup attempt. Belmont had been leading the game early, but then our own @ChristopherWilson inserted an "Upset Alert" chip in his last game update halfway through the period. But also: Anderson pitched in eight points off the bench and Malcolm Brogdon had a stellar first-half performance, with 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting. This game is still well within reach for Belmont, which has a history of hanging tough with good teams in the first round, so stay tuned.
-
UPDATE: West Virginia 60 Buffalo 56, 4:57 remaining in the second half: Both teams have been in the bonus for a while, with Mountaineer starting big Jonathan Holton and Bull reserve Will Regan having already fouled out. Buffalo has been hanging around despite their 17 turnovers, including seven from their freshman point guard Lamonte Bearden. Devin Williams is leading the West Virginia scoring with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

FINAL, "The Izz of March" ed., Georgia 63, Michigan State 70: Georgia gave the Spartans a real scare at the end here, with the last 40 seconds of this game feeling like approximately 40 minutes. For those of you who stayed up to watch the end of the Purdue/Cincinnati game last night, it felt a lot like that. Michigan State led by 11 with just more than a minute left in the period. Georgia found a way to stretch out the clock and chip away at the lead, pulling within a bucket, 63-66, with 21 ticks remaining. But Sparty avoided a first-round #SpartyNo by hitting its free-throws: Denzel Valentine went 4-for-4 from the stripe in the last 20 seconds of the game. Magic Johnson stood up and cheered, MSU coach Tom Izzo gave a trademark hoarse postgame interview and his Spartans survived-and-advanced. Bill Raftery dubbed the whole experience the "The Izz of March." Just let it happen. - Final

UPDATE: WEST VIRGINIA 32 BUFFALO 26, 3:02 remaining in first half: The No. 12 seeds aren't done just yet, as the Bulls are putting on a charge behind the scoring of Justin Moss and Shannon Evans. Buffalo does have 10 turnovers so far, including a sequence before the media timeout where they traded fumbles with the Mountaineers for three straight possessions that will not be making any highlight reels.
