The Boyhood crew is getting some last-minute love before the show from those seated nearby. Hand-shakes, back-slaps and hugs all around. - On location
-
I love this photo-bomb approach to the opening number.
-
Anna Kendrick, giving a shout-out to her Into the Woods role as Cinderella

NPH's commando joke goes over big in the house. - On location
-
He was sitting next to Jack Black, who joined — almost psychotically — into the opening number. He was about to take a selfie, too. That's so 2014.
-
Anna Kendrick AND Neil Patrick Harris on the same stage and the same time? And now Jack Black? The next five hours will be all downhill after this.
-
National treasure Neil Patrick Harris references Kanye West's Grammys stunt in his expectedly awesome opening musical number. *This* is what a real artist is, Kanye!
-
Here's an incomplete list of movies that NPH mentioned in his big opening song: Singing in the Rain, Argo, Back to the Future, Basic Instinct, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Fargo, Good Will Hunting, The Perfect Storm, Frozen, Hunger Games, The Blind Side, Giant, American Beauty, ET, Raging Bull, Jaws, Wizard of Oz, Dirty Dancing, Star Wars, Into the Woods, Field of Dreams

Ethan Hawke is either loving this opening more than anyone else or giving it a big pan. It's hard to tell from my perch in the nose-bleeds, but he's extremely animated. - On location
-
Oh, also North by Northwest. He mentioned that one, too.
-
Oscar opening number ends with NPH literally BECOMING AN OSCAR
-
'American Sniper,' which has made over $300 million, was only in four theaters when it got all of its Oscar nominations. Not sure if the nominations helped it (dubious!) but it helped the eight Best Picture nominees reach over $600 million at the box office.
-
A look at Cate Blanchett on the Oscars red carpet from her first appearance in 1999 to today.
-
Oprah, we should mention, is nominated for an Oscar for producing 'Selma.' She also co-starred in the movie.

The "non-rich" half that NPH just referred to didn't seem too thrilled. The whole Boyhood contingent are especially antsy. Lupita earns genuine applause from Ethan Hawke, though. - On location

We're on Best Supporting Actor, the first award of the night
-
They're really showing long clips from each nominee

Pleasant cheers for all the Best Supporting Actor clips, but J.K. Simmons wins the applause-meter in the room., - On location

- Winner
And the winner is... J.K. Simmons, for 'Whiplash'! The man had over 130 acting credits over a 20+ year career before this nomination. That includes the yellow M&M from the commercials. - Winner

Ethan Hawke gives hearty applause for Simmons and scattered standing-Os throughout the auditorium. - On location

I interviewed 'Whiplash' writer/director Damien Chazelle about writing his vicious insults as the band leader Fletcher. Turns out that JK, who also starred in the short film that inspired that full feature, helped shape them.

J.K. Simmons wins Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash"
-
JK, you'll be happy to know I talk to my parents all the time. Sometimes I even call them!
-
Is NPH actually reading his Oscar predictions live?
-
Maybe this is another magic trick. I'm glad he's using all his talents tonight.
-
I mean, Billy Crystal couldn't do magic. Flaunt it if you got it!
-
NPH loves magic, FYI. And it looks like he's doing another trick.
-

Lady Gaga chatting up Boyhood cast from across the aisle. She and Ethan Hawke are like kids in class. Meanwhile, audience politely chuckling at the NPH bits, but nothing has really brought down the house yet. - On location
-
So what's happening here is that NPH had his Oscar predictions locked up, and he's having Octavia Spencer guard them, so there's no way he could change them to make them more accurate. But I feel like this is a gag!

Liam Neeson, an Oscar nominee for Schindler's List

Liam Neeson will never get away from people saying that he has a particular set of skills
