A very old Tilda Swinton was the crowning achievement of the Grand Budapest makeup team
-
This is a big loss for Guardians of the Galaxy, which is also nominated for effects, but nothing else
-
Grand Budapest Hotel beats out Guardians of the Galaxy, which you could say was the favor in this category. Of course, Groot was computerized, so no one made tree makeup, which didn't help
-
I was surprised that Channing Tatum didn't get an Oscar nomination, to be honest. I'm a big fan of Mark Ruffalo, so it was nice to see him get a nomination for Foxcatcher, but Tatum really transformed for that film, much more so than Ruffalo. Tatum showed a vulnerability and frankly, a scary side, in that movie. Ruffalo was mostly nice guy Ruffalo, though you could say he was the glue of the movie.
-
That said, the movie did a ton for his career, putting Tatum in a whole new stratosphere of dramatic actors. It's clear he can do comedy (and strip), but now it won't be seen as a stretch when he gets cast in a dramatic role
-
It's true, Tatum was really impressive in Foxcatcher. I think it will set him up nicely for more dramatic roles. Plus, you know, the next twelve Magic Mike sequels.

Watch out for J Lo's dress! It has a life of its own. #Oscars2015 @NewYorker http://pbs.twimg.com/media/B-fn-O-IAAE207M.jpg

OK, time to decamp to the bar to see what's up. It's a bit of a hike from the balcony, but stay tuned... - On location

Disney could sell those Yoda dresses and make millions. They are going all-out with Star Wars; beyond new films, they'll have a ton of Star Wars-themed theme park additions, TV series, and a ton of merchandising. And a cruise!

Twitter reacts to Neil Patrick Harris' opening number
Neil Patrick Harris opened the 87th Academy Awards with an Broadway-style tribute to the Oscars. And Twitter, for the most part, loved it.Feb. 22, 2015- Reply

Others, let's call them NPH-connoisseurs, felt it didn't compare to his openers for the Tony Awards.Gonna be honest. I was hoping for a better opening number from Neil Patrick Harris. His Tony openers have been show stoppers #OscarsFeb. 22, 2015- Reply

Colleen Atwood didn't win this one, but her list of Oscar nominated costumes is impressive. Here's a conversation we had about some of them.
-
Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor are presenting the next category
-
It's Best Foreign Language film... Ida and Leviathan are the front-runners, but Wild Tales could win, too.
-
- Winner
The Oscar goes to Ida - Winner
-
It's a black and white Polish film, about a young nun who finds out that she's actually Jewish
-
It's a short, difficult, but beautiful film that deals with the guilt felt in the post-war years in Poland, which was also suffering under the crushing hand of Communism. To survive, it suggests, you had to be a traitor to people you love.
-
Ida's director is much more easy-going than his film. But it's great, and it's streaming on Netflix!
-
The film, which again was in black and white, is also nominated for Best Cinematography
-
That was great -- the music tried to play him off, he just kept talking and he WON.
-
This song was written by songwriter Diane Warren, a total Oscar powerhouse who also wrote "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "Don't Want to Miss A Thing." She's been nominated for seven Oscars, hasn't won yet, and told us she was very unhappy about how this song has been ignored.
-
Rita Ora is a beautiful woman and she can really sing, but that performance was pretty meh.
-
This looks to be the one category that Interstellar could win. After all that hype!
-
- Winner
The winner is... Interstellar! - Winner
-
Christopher Nolan's film was a narrative disappointment, but visually, it was incredible. They used a lot of practical effects, with "real" spaceships on gimbals, but the special effects for the space travel and black hole was incredible
-
Surprisingly enough, a superhero movie has not won best visual effects since the original Superman in 1978.
-
In fact, they created a mathematical formula that computed what the inside of a black hole actually looks like, which was a scientific breakthrough
-
-
Kevin Hart and Anna Kendrick, who may be the smallest pair of presenters of all time!
-
We're on Best Animated Short, the sort of category that can make or break your Oscar pool
-
Anna Kendrick wasn't nominated for Into the Woods, but she'll get another shot. Right now she's in a terrific musical called The Last Five Years, which you can watch on VOD. And the Pitch Perfect sequel is coming!
-
- Winner
And the winner is Feast! - Winner
-
The animated short is a product of Disney's renewed emphasis on shorts, including the Oscar-winning Paperman.
-
I interviewed the director, Patrick Osbourne, who is accepting the award right now. He helped pioneer a new animation style, which looks hand-drawn, but is computer animated
-

Here's that story with Feast director Patrick Osbourne
-
The Rock is in the house! He strides up with Zoe Saldana, who is a secret box office star, between Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course, she is computer animated in each of them, but she's still at the center of both films
