Now we're on Best Animated Feature... which does not have The Lego Movie nominated.
-
- Winner
The Oscar for Best Animated Feature goes to Disney's Big Hero 6! - Winner
-
That's a huge win for Disney, and at least statistically, an upset; most of the precursor awards went to DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 2
-
It's also Disney's second Best Animated Feature in a row, after a little movie called Frozen last year. It signals the continued renaissance at the studio.
-
-
Another thing I did not expect to hear tonight: the music from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
-
Big Hero 6 is actually a Marvel property. Don Hall, the director, found it while going through the comic company's huge back catalog once Disney acquired the studio

The comic books are quite different than the movie, though, as you'll learn from this expert article that I wrote about it!
-
All of the incidental music appears to be taken from the Best Original Song nominees list. "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun , "Eye of the Tiger" from Rocky III, and "Let's Hear It For the Boy" from Footloose have also made appearances.
-
Cheryl Boone-Isaacs, the head of the Academy, is on stage. Let's hope there's some Dick Poop redux.
-
Just FYI, Cheryl Boone-Isaacs is the one who said "Dick Poop" on the Oscar nominations morning. This is our trenchant analysis.
-
Boone-Isaacs is talking about free speech and expression here, which is hard not to see as a veiled comment on The Interview. Sony stuck out its chest, acting as if they protected free speech after un-canceling the movie. I'd love for them to cut to Michael Lynton, the head of the studio.

Back to Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux for a sec. If Cate Blanchett was homecoming queen, Jen & Justin were Cutest Couple. They looked as loving and together as ever. So don't subscribe to rumors of them being on the rocks. - On location
-
Chris Pratt and Felicity Jones, perhaps the two biggest breakout stars of 2014 (at least in the top 5!) are now on stage

Chris Pratt, the star of Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, is presenting Best Production Design. Fitting
-
We have a double nominee for Production Design: Anna Pinnock, who designed The Grand Budapest Hotel and Into the Woods. She's a previous nominee for Life of Pi, Golden Compass & Gosford Park.
-
- Winner
And the Oscar goes to The Grand Budapest Hotel! - Winner
-
That gives Wes Anderson's movie its third below-the-line prime-time win.
-
I spoke with Adam Stockhausen, who shared this award with Anna Pinnock, about designing the awesome ski chase scene, with had real life actors and miniatures and took a year to make!
-
-
Wes Anderson looks pretty happy with all these wins. Grand Budapest is the first of his films to be nominated for Best Director and Best Picture, and he knows he's unlikely to take home the big prizes.
-
Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain are presenting Best Cinematography, which is a shoo-in for Emanuel Lubezki for Birdman
-
- Winner
And it's Chivo, as Jessica Chastain (and everyone else) called him. Emanuel Lubezki! - Winner
-
Emmanuel Lubezki won last year for Gravity. He's responsible for setting up those astounding long shots in Birdman, and you can see a preview of his Birdman work in the famous car sequence from Children of Men, for which he also received an Oscar nomination.
-
Roger Deakins, who was nominated for Unbroken, lost yet again. That's 13 losses for the great cinematographer. But Lubezki shot a film that looks like it was one continuous take, so you certainly can't argue against his win. Especially since Unbroken wasn't very good.
-
Birdman won Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Cinematography
-
- On location
Despite all the losses, the Boyhood cast seems genuinely happy when Birdman takes Best Picture. Go figure. - On location
-
The old Hollywood axiom: Oscar voters love movies about showbiz. This is a dark look at Hollywood, and the assembly line of junk that studios produce, but no one wants to believe they're part of that problem, so the win makes sense
-
Sean Penn starred in Iñárritu's film 21 Grams, so that questionable green card joke was between friends (I hope).
-
No reason for Michael Keaton to be upset after that Birdman win.
-
Michael Keaton gets to make an acceptance speech of sorts. He didn't win Best Actor, but Alejandro González Iñárritu gave him a lot of time. He seems happy!
-
The show itself was enjoyable enough, but no big surprises aside from Lady Gaga's soprano. It's a little disappointing that it was so predictable.
-
Yeah, I was bummed to see Boyhood mostly shut out (though go Patricia Arquette!), but other than that, no surprises at all. Even John Travolta lived up to his reputation.
-
There's lots to relive, though, so check out our hub for all things Academy Awards, right here!

I will say that it was nice to see Selma get a moment, even if it wasn't as much of a moment as it deserved.
