NYC hotels treat Westminster dogs like VIPs
Ever wonder where the more than 2,700 dogs competing at this year's Westminster Kennel Club dog show stay? The Wall Street Journal reports that more than 1,000 hounds are currently lodging in hotels around Madison Square Garden. And they're getting the 4-bone treatment:
The Manhattan NYC, which is hosting 297 dogs this year, turned Room 1231 into a VIPaws Suite, featuring a big-screen TV playing dog shows, padded armchairs, treats and the aforementioned outdoor relief area with its specially treated plastic turf and single potted bush. The turf will be discarded after Westminster, said manager Julie Torres, who was texting photos of the dog guests to her daughter all morning. The hotel also contracts with a service at the show’s end to deep-clean the guest rooms, which takes three days.
The New Yorker Hotel, which is hosting 100 dogs including five dozen Yorkshire terriers, offers grooming stations and dog treadmills, said sales and marketing director John Yazbeck. Some dogs avail themselves of room service from the hotel’s Tick Tock Diner, scarfing up steaks and hamburgers. The New Yorker also accommodates Westminster guests who request the same room year after year.
“The dog owners are very superstitious,” said Mr. Yazbeck. -

The craziest dog names at Westminster
Via NPR, there are plenty:- Easthill Broxden Woodland Lettuce Entertain You (bassett hound)
- Starfire's Spank Me Hard, Call Me Crazy (Pomeranian)
- McHill's His Royal Highness Prince Gizmo House of Gremlin (border terrier)
- Champion DV-9 Canine's Red Hot Star (Finnish Spitz)
Of course, the dogs don't necessarily respond to their "long" names, which are part of the American Kennel Club registration process. They usually have a short one, known as a "call name," like Spot or Fido. McHill's His Royal Highness Prince Gizmo House of Gremlin, the border terrier above, answers to Gizmo. -

So how does a show dog become a "Best in Show" dog? As we wait for the big moment - the naming of the Best in Show winner - here's a quick explainer on how the final seven show pups make it to the coveted last round. How do they get to Best in Show?
The Westminster consists of two days of elimination rounds. The dogs are separated into seven groups: hound, toy, sporting, non-sporting, herding, working and terrier. Here's the simple version of what happens next:
First: All the dogs show in breed groups, i.e. all the Westies strut the ring, all the Beagles, all the pugs, etc. From each breed group, one is named Best in Breed. Here's a list of all the breeds that enter the Westminster show, there are 192.
Second: Next, the Best in Breed winners compete to be "Best in Group." All the assorted terrier winners take the ring together, toughing it out to be named "Best in Group." Same goes for the all of the breeds that fall under the herders group, the sporting dogs, the working dogs, etc.
Third: That adds up to seven "Best in Group" winners, and these are the cream of the crop canines who compete under the final spotlight for the silver cup, a steak lunch at Sardi's and the honored title of Westminster "Best in Show."
Here are the "Best in Group" winners so far - toy, hound, non-sporting and herding - who will take the ring later as part of the final seven [More results here on the Westminster Kennel Club site]:Winner of the Toy Group is the Shih Tzu, GCH Hallmark Jolei Rocket Power!
