So how does a show dog become a "Best in Show" dog? As we wait for the big moment - the naming of the Best in Show winner - here's a quick explainer on how the final seven show pups make it to the coveted last round. How do they get to Best in Show?
The Westminster consists of two days of elimination rounds. The dogs are separated into seven groups: hound, toy, sporting, non-sporting, herding, working and terrier. Here's the simple version of what happens next:
First: All the dogs show in breed groups, i.e. all the Westies strut the ring, all the Beagles, all the pugs, etc. From each breed group, one is named Best in Breed. Here's a list of all the breeds that enter the Westminster show, there are 192.
Second: Next, the Best in Breed winners compete to be "Best in Group." All the assorted terrier winners take the ring together, toughing it out to be named "Best in Group." Same goes for the all of the breeds that fall under the herders group, the sporting dogs, the working dogs, etc.
Third: That adds up to seven "Best in Group" winners, and these are the cream of the crop canines who compete under the final spotlight for the silver cup, a steak lunch at Sardi's and the honored title of Westminster "Best in Show."
Here are the "Best in Group" winners so far - toy, hound, non-sporting and herding - who will take the ring later as part of the final seven [More results here on the Westminster Kennel Club site]:Winner of the Toy Group is the Shih Tzu, GCH Hallmark Jolei Rocket Power!
